Safety razors are so much better than cartridges (or disposables). Not only for environmental reasons but it gives me so much less skin irritations. A straight razor is probably even better as there is not waste at all, but I could not really get used to it, because even after about a year it took so much longer and was too difficult around the edges of my face (especially the chin).
I have never tried a straight razor. I fear I am to careless for that. But then again I was also somewhat scared of the safety razor for the first time using it. Just to find out how easy and unirritating shaving can be with it. Also shaving time is quality time! So I might try the straight blade someday :D
