The penultimate episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s first season was a big one for many reasons, including that it was directed by Captain William Riker himself, Jonathan Frakes. Ahead of next week’s finale, we were able to talk to Frakes about the big reunion between Caleb (Sandro Rosta) and his mom Anisha (Tatiana Maslany), how he directs such a storied franchise, how he deals with fan community hate, and more.
It’s not for me but neither was Discovery. That being said, there were folks that liked those shows and that’s great. I don’t have a problem with new Trek, SNW and Lower Decks are more my speed.
Trek is branching out. All the stuff from the 90s was episodic, fitting into the syndication template.
SNW and LD are a lot more like those 90s series, which is why I like them. It’s also the same reason I like The Orville.
Disco is a lot more like a Game of Thrones style series. There are some subplots but a lot of the show is focused on the big story.
Academy is a school drama. Not my bag but it’s definitely someone’s. But just like I’m not gonna shit on someone’s love of Buffy the Vampire Slayer - which isn’t for me for similar reasons - I’m not gonna shit on someone for liking Academy.
Discovery and SFA are terrible soap-opera garbage. it’s the type of writing some alfluenza orange-county high-schooler thinks is witty; it’s what people who can’t read consider “good”.
