I really hope beehaw is slow to block them, those shitposters are feral
edit: bad news, they say they’re not even going to be federating at first and when they do it will probably just be with us :( I wanted to see the confusion from libs interacting with maniacs on that instance
Just a reminder some of the “Marxists” there are of the CIA-compatible variety. Vulgar views, abuse of standard Marxist/AES positions (especially around sex work, they call those who uphold the Marxist position SWERFs).
Not awful but not free from problems either. Can mostly be ignored but I foresee struggle sessions in our future on certain issues. Certainly rather federate with them over any of the other instances but I hope our mods have their banhammers ready and we have our downvotes handy because they have some BAD takes.
I foresee struggle sessions in our future.
Those will be a thing to watch. Hexbear is notorious for their struggle sessions.
Don’t get me started about one struggle session they had about bidets and weather being able to wipe your ass is bourgeois.
Otherwise, I am excited and a bit worried.
that sounds fucking hilarious tbh
You should see it for yourself, just to drive home the point that this actually happened.
My ass is “the fun zone”
This is a defense of not using water to cleanse the butt. I crave death.
People cleaned their ass with water and stones and leaves, we should be happy we have pressurization to make the water itself provide abrasion. This is ridiculous.
Man what’s left is quite funny but so much of it was removed or deleted I’m a little bummed
What actually are the “struggle sessions” on Hexbear? Like, is it just a popular argument or do people actually get banned over them? Because some people seem to be taking them seriously… which seems silly.
There do tend to be bans (but smurf accounts are common because they only have permabans). Their struggle sessions are infamous because you’ll get heated arguments over the dumbest shit. Some notable ones are the outdoor cat struggle session, the rock stacking struggle session, and the bidet struggle session.
I’ve been on many sites that enthusiastically argue over the dumbest things and in the harshest language, but to take them seriously and banhammer people over those disagreements is a level I can’t imagine descending to.
Even when old /b/ would ban people for not liking chocolate milk and pouring it down the sink, it was obviously ironic.
Yea no kidding, I saw that struggle session about toilet paper v bidet and noped out for a few days. There’s being terminally online then that…Has its own term.
TBF I don’t think they’ll have temp bans until they merge the upstream.
I haven’t really seen any of that but then again I’ve only been on that site for a few weeks, they do seem significantly meaner than here
They basically quashed the one example I gave a year ago. Anyone who disagreed with their point of view has been banned, driven away, or learned to keep quiet on them.
They’re better than 99% of reddit on everything including especially imperialism but there are moments where significant parts of their user-base just kind of veer off far away from any DiaMat, principled ML views into western leftism shall we say. I don’t foresee major issues but definitely there could be a few points rare to come up that absolutely blow up into shit-storms between us and them and we’ll just have to agree to disagree and ask them to respect our rules. On the whole it should be nice and infuse some more life and activity into lemmygrad.
Thanks for the insight!
I remember a post talking about federation with us and one comment (person 1) was saying they should just absorb our community completely. Someone (person 2) responded with basically “yeah they are probably not willing to do that” and gave a few examples pertaining to they difference is drama levels.
Que persona 2 getting Rabbidly attacked by person 1 in a very long comment chain that was literally the perfect example as to why we would want to stay separate. I didn’t go back to Hexbear for a long while after that.
I once caught a back and forth like that. It was all about lemmy devs not wanting to implement hexbear’s gender pronouns on avatars. It was a completely pointless discussion where one person was convinced that lemmy is run by bigots.
One of the things I dislike about hexbear is how US-centric people on there tend to be. Sometimes I feel like I’m on reddit due to the amount of identity politics, pop culture references and hyper-specific memes that only someone from the Empire would really get.
Our admins will ban people like person 1 im not too worried
They better not absorb us, I don’t even understand why they think we would even want that to happen in the first place!
Stuff like their intense struggle sessions are what drove me away. Idk if they have changed it now but when I was over there a lot they had no vetting and no way to IP ban so any trolls could just spam accounts. There’s a lot of users that come off as so over the top that I can only assume they are trying to make certain communities look bad. You have to be wary of any community that’s and easy target for controversy. And if you go in and try to have a reasonable argument or criticism of any kind you get immediately attacked. I still go there. They have a great news source and good info, but there are definitely bad faith actors.
“Intense struggle sessions” such as policing people for not upvoting their posts enough, importing /r/vegancirclejerk moderators, I’d prefer a cultural revolution style struggle if I had to pick! Not to mention that they have a problem with people using sockpuppets & trolling, which really makes it no better than reddit. I heard the whole vegan debacle pissed off their webcoders but it’s not like making a lemmy is hard
Honestly, I’m understating and omitting quite a bit.
this_is_where_the_fun_begins.mp4
Oh I remember the vegan imports. Anyone that so much as mentioned eating meat got harassed. Rabidly. The food com was a warzone. I think I found the Genzedong sub around that time and it was so much… Quieter. Like going to a peaceful outdoor diner after spending weeks eating at Chucky Cheese.
Importing reddit moderators and telling the community to suck it was really psychopathic
Yeah I’ve seen what you’ve mentioned myself. I hope Lemmygrad can sustain the influx of posts and not degrade in quality.
very cool, good timing with the R*ddit API shenanigans
I wanted to see the confusion from libs interacting with maniacs on that instance
No you do not. I am pretty sure you can get banned from Hexbear for saying nincompoop, but it will happen like 2 days later. They’ll probably just focus on nitpicking us. Thing is you guys read books, you didn’t just watch Zizek videos and giggle until he penned the Compact mag article.
That being said, I’m quite optimistic. I don’t like the UI on the site but SeventyTwoTrillion basically produces their own version of the NakedCapitalism news digest every day, I look forward to federating.
it’s the emotes more than anything, for me. and 2 days is plenty of time for me to find the thread and laugh at it
I’m a default emoji guy, I’m just used to it. They do have some good stickers for sure
Why will they not federate with others, I need to see them all charge into Beehaw and Midwest Social, even if its only a day before they are taken off,
And with my dislike of those instances aside, I feel just federating with us would be a less advantages position in general, by opeining up here, yes we both get user exchange but thats it, Hexbearians? Hexbearians cannot go to the wider lemmy world, and educate others, and if they only federate with us we will only nitpick each other, instead of going out to the wider instances and mabey changing a mind or 2
I just think they don’t want to deal with the complete brainrot, their admins constantly have to deal with wreckers
That is very fair
Why will they not federate with others, I need to see them all charge into Beehaw and Midwest Social, even if its only a day before they are taken off,
The short answer to this question is that it will require some robust discussion before a decision is made. At this point, no decision has been made one way or another.
On the bright side, they can make sure their federation works and that their damn site works before opening up to the other Lemmy instances. Their stats are a bit wonky (and probably inflated by ban evasions as mentioned already) but they appear to be HUGE, even compared to the recent influx here and on beehaw.
I keep considering if i should get a hexbear, can anyone give me context in how they interprit left unity?
Anti-sectarianism is the general rule. The community is predominantly Marxist, but has its share of Anarchists. There is no official list of points of unity, but anti-imperialism, anti-capitalism, anti-racism, anti-gender/sexuality discrimination are basically non-negotiable.
I can only speak for myself, but my sentiment is that the left in the imperial core is so disorganized that the majority of sectarian disagreements are purely hypothetical and stupid to get worked up over. We can have discussions about theory and tactics, but there is no reason to assemble the perfect party platform and get into bitter fights about its nuances when there is no party to speak of. You can’t build the mass line without the mass.
Of course, this doesn’t apply to the type of historically illiterate, American-exceptionalist Reddit “Anarchists,” or any of that PatSoc MAGA Communism bullshit. People stanning the Shining Path will probably get a lot of weird looks. We give the handful of Trots their fair share of noogies, but we don’t exclude them.
It is a relatively small community. If you are comment in good faith and demonstrate you aren’t full of imperialist brainworms you will probably be fine. If you pick out individual people with the dumbest takes and graft that onto broad movements, putting words in peoples’ mouths, you might run into trouble. We love dunking on people with bad takes, but if you take a particular Bellingcat dropout’s cringepost and act like they are the designated spokesperson of Anarchism, that’s the kind of thing that doesn’t fly. Basically, don’t be disingenuous.
We’re not the type of community that will ban somebody for mentioning in passing that they participate in mutual aid on the basis that mutual aid is charity and therefor not praxis. That kind of hair-splitting dogmatism can stay on Reddit as far as we’re concerned.
There is no official list of points of unity, but anti-imperialism
This is exactly the point where ultras and anarchists are hard off though.
There are still a handful of anarchists on Hexbear but I think most left over time
Thank you so much!
I think they frown upon calling each other liberals outright, I’m not really sure I just shitpost on there
