I don’t think dehumanizing name calling is acceptable here. There are only three rules, and following them isn’t very difficult. You can disagree with someone and be respectful towards them. If you can’t be respectful towards them, you can simply not reply at all. There is no excuse for being hateful.

It’s really unbelievable the amount of aggression, hate, personal attacks, and the like I’m seeing. And the issue is, those tactics aren’t used in addition to real logical and rational discussion backed by facts, they’re used in place of those. So instead of seeing level-headed conversation (even with disagreement!), I’m seeing an unsettling amount of vitriol that does nothing useful.

If you’re so unquestioningly tied to your beliefs that you become aggressive at the thought of considering that you may be wrong, and don’t feel bad for attacking another human to defend your ego, I don’t know why you engage in “discussion”. There’s some leap people take from “this person has a different opinion than me” to “this person is not worthy of respect and actively deserves to be attacked for their beliefs”.

I understand reddit was thriving largely on rage, and I guess it was probably naive of me to assume that people would moderate themselves in another forum to act any differently.
