“Do you think my tattoo is cool?” No, I don’t. There are no cool tattoos. “Check out my sleeve!” Oh god ew.

Tattoos themselves are stupid. Doubly so if it’s some media IP. “I put Batman on my body!” “Look at this image of Goku on my calf!” I can’t think of many things I’d want to do less than that.

There are a few narrow exceptions. Chances are yours isn’t one of them.

If you personally like tattoos, fine. I’m not saying nobody should get tattoos because I don’t like them. I’m stating my opinion that tattoos are stupid, and I am stating it here because it is probably not a popular opinion.

    Unpopular opinion on your opinion:

Stupid implies lack of thought on consequences or bad logic, which I don’t think applies to tattoos as they are (for the most part) an aesthetic personal choice.

Cool though? Yeah sure, that is a vague and subjective term.

So no, most (not all) tattoos are not stupid.

Counter point: many people get random tattoos that surely carry no meaning. Some tattoo parlors have quarter prize machines, where you get whatever tattoo comes out of it.

Plenty of people get tattoos without any thought towards the consequences. Thats why tattoo cover ups and removals are also a thing.

Does a tattoo need to have meaning? Sure, lots of people get tattoos to commemorate or remember something. I have a matching tattoo with my siblings that’s meaningful to me. But I don’t think a tattoo has to have meaning or it’s stupid. My sister has a cute little squirtle tattoo that she got bc they had a holiday sale for small tattoos. It doesn’t have any meaning aside from she thinks squirtle is cute. But it makes her happy. Isn’t that enough? Sure she might get it covered up or removed later in life, but for now it makes her happy and I think that makes it worth it. I think a lot of what makes life meaningful is the small, meaningless stuff that simply makes us happy

I won’t begrudge op their opinion to not like tattoos; they’re posting their opinion in the right community. If op was saying that all tattoos are stupid bc willingly stabbing ink into your skin is stupid, then I wouldn’t necessarily disagree. It’s certainly an unnecessary risk. But to say that most tattoos are stupid bc op doesn’t think the tattoo is worth having, I think that’s unfair. They don’t get to decide what’s a worthy tattoo. But the most important part is op acknowledges that it’s not their body, so other people can do what they want. Op can just hit people with the “if it makes you happy/if you like it, then that’s what matters” when people ask their opinion on the new tattoo

The squirtle tattoo your sister has doesn’t qualify as meaningless to me. Truly meaningless tattoos would qualify as stupid to me, but it also wouldn’t bother me much. In the grand scheme of things, tattoos are pretty harmless so its hard to get worked up against them.
