This meme is over a year old but I don’t think I’ve posted it here before.
Fun fact, when he originally wrote this, he was thinking of dead air during the 60s, where it was just a greyish wash, not the more salt and pepper static of the 80s
I’m glad someone else thought about this!!
William Gibson himself talks about this in the retrospective introduction to Neuromancer.
It took at least a decade for me to realize that many of my readers, even in 1984, could never have experienced Neuromancer’s opening line as I’d intended them to. I’d actually composed that first image with the black-and-white video-static of my childhood in mind, sodium-silvery and almost painful—a whopping anachronism, right at the very start of my career in the imaginary future.
The color static of the image above is predictably incorrect.
Why was it grey instead of just noise?
Or this

When YT decides this channel isn’t bringing enough ad revenue.

this is gibson right?
First line in Neuromancer
thought so. i never finished it! but i did read a few chapters.
very sloggy
sloggy?
slog
it wasn’t a slog so much as all the proper nouns i didnt recognize prevented me from getting into the world of the story

The 2025 is definitely the most accurate for a cyberpunk setting
It’s the big bang’s fart
I put pen to paper when I was younger and described the rain as “the colour of computer shells”.
Slightly different setting if the reader had a Macbook, an iMac g3, or a Macintosh.
2028 the sky will be ads for betting sites.
Don’t give them ideas… Please… 😰
I once heard that analog tv static was the cosmic microwave background
even the memes making fun of it are too modern. the static was pretty much greyscale on a crt in the 80s.
my dumb tv just says “no hdmi input detected”
All work
I prefer the first.
You’re good.
