In this video Jason from notJustBikes shows these lights and I really like the design. Do you know what is the company that makes these? Are they any good?
They are from a company called Reelight. However one might add that they only blink once (when the magnet passes the light) for a very short moment! When going really fast that might be okay but when going slow or while standing one is hardly visible with those. I wouldn’t feel safe with these if I wasn’t riding on danish bike paths.
There is another company called Magniclight which sells something similar but with very different working principle therefore providing constant light.
However I do still ride with either hub dynamo or battery powered lights. Which give me constant light and even brake light indications.
A little late but I wanted to chime in and say that reelight has a no-blink model that I use on 2 bikes.
The light is enough for night visibility but not for navigation.
didn’t knew about that - seems to be very similar to what Magniclight does. I like the concept!
Thank you for all the precious hints!

That was my plan exactly. I have a rear light with rechargeable batteries, but with no indication, I fear to be dark without noticing

We sold those where I used to work. They are pretty cool but don’t play well with disc brakes, for obvious reasons.
don’t play well with disc brakes
I have the old kind of brakes, so no issue.
It looks also like they are not so easy to steal (you have to remove the wheel). Is this true?

Well, it is already a couple of minutes to unscrew it plus another couple of minutes to unscrew the magnetic strip. As you wrote, already much longer than normal lights

Yes, you are totally right. I have to consider this, since I can always take the clip on with me, but not theese ones.
As I remember, that is true. I had QR back then, though, so I didn’t really consider it.
Reelight (magnetic bicycle light).
Those are very popular in The Netherlands since they are virtually maintenance free (no battery to charge, etc.)
It’s worth noting that the light output is very low and it’s mostly meant to be used in the cities to be seen and not to light the road itself.
It’s kinda similar to the old style wheel dynos (and not like newer hub dynos which can have pretty decent light output).
Looks like the scenario that fits me, adding that I plan to use them as backup of battery lights that I would still use.
Thank you
I’ve always wanted to install a dynamo on my bike, seems like a big costly job.
Buying a wheel and lights from Germany can be well worth while. They have regulations and expectations so they’re very common mainstream items, and starting prices are surprisingly low.
If you can build a wheel, which is a great skill to acquire (truing stand for Christmas?), swapping in a dynohub may be pretty easy. The flange size may be close enough to reuse the spokes. I did it - felt weird to deconstruct a brand new wheel.
This is very appealing. Thank you for the information.
I’ve used bike-discount.de and got some good stuff to the US. There’s a flat shipping fee so if you combine a few things it spreads the cost.
First time I wanted a dynamo hub to build up a wheel I went there and found I could buy a whole wheel with the hub and decent flanged spokes for less than the hub alone cost on Amazon US. I was disappointed as I really wanted to build a wheel :(.
Edit: I look there now and wheels aren’t shipping to the US. Of course I don’t know where you are…
imo it worth it if you bike frequently, especially during winter.
I’ve had a bike with dynamo wheel and static lights many years ago, now I do not want anything else on my commute bike, you don’t have to worry about battery, theft or simply to forget lights, for less than 100 Eur.
After few months/years it is still working and costs nothing.
