Is it just me or does NJB sound increasingly pissed off in each video he releases? I mean, I get it but still.
I think that since he became a kind of public figure, he has to deal with a lot of people of the worst kind.
Just as an example, he recently reopened (after closing it for the API thing) his subreddit explaining that he feared that some reddit admin could take it over and give it to some hater, just as an example
https://www.reddit.com/r/notjustbikes/comments/14enj03/the_future_of_this_subreddit/
I saw he said that he’s a bit fed up with talking about America, USA in particular. It’s a lost cause, but people keep asking him about it, so I think he feels compelled to make content about it.
At least that’s my interpretation.
Really hoping that people will continue to share NJB and other people from that section of youtube (RM Transit, CLimateTown, CIty Nerd, etc) and we keep seeing trends away from single-family housing and stroads.
Anybody else feel like the tone of his videos has changed? I used to recommend NJB videos to family and friends, but now I feel like his videos would alienate them more than win them over.
Definitely a bitter, almost aggressive tone to this one. It also comes off as a “fuck you, I got mine” kind of messages to say “North American infrastructure sucks, which is why I emigrated to the Netherlands”, because it’s not as if emigration is an option for most people in the US or Canada since it’s expensive and most people don’t have a viable path to a resident visa.
That being said, nothing he said was wrong, but sharing this video is probably not going to help anyone change their view.
This has for the most part has always been his message, he left because he tried advocacy and it didn’t help. That’s why he would point people on his sub who couldn’t move to advocacy groups like Strong Towns, as he claimed he wasn’t an advocate himself since he had no patience for it or hope anything would substantially change in his lifetime in Canada and the US.
Yeah, the problem is his beloved Amsterdam got better based on incremental changed done by advocates, so I don’t really blame him while at the same time it’s not the right answer, imo. We should all be demanding change.
I’m glad he made this video. People need to be informed on how to respond to the usual carbrained talking points they like to bring up and he covered the big ones.
