I think this is a big deal:
-
all new apartment buildings in UE should have 2 bike parkings per apartment
-
Non residential buildings should have a significant amount of bike parkings. Existing buildings with more than 20 parking spaces would be forced to implement significant amount of bike parkings. I just hope they won’t install the"dish drainer" bike parking kind everywhere!
parking minimums
CLOSE THE GATES
for bicycles
OPEN THE GATES
Everything bad regarding cars becomes good when dealing with bikes:
- induced demand
- traffic
- parking minimums
I really hope they bring that to NYC, but I highly doubt it will ever happen =(

Sadly, me too (from Berlin)…
I wish my (very new) apartment complex had already had to follow this… massive underground garage with like 140 car parking spaces and there’s a pitiful 2 small bike parking things that fit maybe 25 each. For I believe it was 131 apartments.
Needless to say there are a lot of bicycles standing disorganized on the car parking space next to the insufficient bike parking, lol
And, great shock, dozens of car parking spaces seem to be vacant, because people living in a building that is literally 15s by foot from a bus station, where you can also cycle 3km to get to the city center, do not average more than 1 car per apartment.
Im in the us and my condo passed a rule to allow units to buy and get put up these nice vertical hangers. Two per spot. I jumped at it but hout of 80 units maybe only a dozen did it. totally nuts to me. cost a hundred or so dollars to do and its a great convenience plus I view it as a significant plus if/when I sell. Our complex already allows two bikes in some common racks (so can do four bikes) a few people broke the rule and put up four hangers. I sorta wish I did but im not one to break rules unless I have to.
What are the “dish drainer” style parking racks?
these ones:
I hate them:
- really difficult or impossible to lock the frame
- I have to bend down to ground level to lock my bike
- with heavy loaded bike the bending force is so much it becomes dangerous for the bike
Ah! Yes these are horrible!! I’d dare say they’re worse than no bike parking at all.
The co-legislators, Council and Parliament, are expected to adopt the directive in the early months of 2024. Once published in the EU Official Journal and entered into force, Member States will have 24 months to transpose the EU directive into national law. Implementation starts thereafter.
So, maybe, there will be action starting in 2026, and new constructions with this norm maybe in 2027/2028.
I don’t expect construction with it before 2030. Anyway this is a great move.
My apartement complex has lots of bike parking in front and in the parking garage.
The problem is none are tied to the apartments. The result is the majority of spots is full of bikes that are rarely used or just junk left over from previous tennants.
Only two? We are a family of four, no car and own five bikes and a trailer.
