Like I know there’s twilight menu, but I like that you can basically hold start and boot right into the GBA games. I wonder if there is a similar barebones approach to playing DS games?

Bit of a necropost, but the closest thing you can forward your NDS as .cia to install on your home, although I believe it is limited to 40 “DSi” (which include DS games installed this games) titles. https://gbatemp.net/threads/nds-forwarder-cias-for-your-home-menu.426174/
