  • It seems like he’s always caving whenever measures come up which should not be passed, even at threat of shutting down the government, for days, weeks or months.

I’ll applaud him that he’s able to get from his house to work unassisted, without having a spine.

Personally, I prefer Vanguard over other US brokerages, say Fidelity, Etrade, Schwab, etc because the company itself is owned by the funds you purchase, rather than outside investors. As weak a reason as that is.

i’ve previously read that many non-us banks and some brokerages don’t like (read:may refuse) doing business with americans because the USA has strict tax rules and need for disclosures (I think if the cumulative total of all a citizens foreign accounts is over $10,000 it must be reported). If you have recomendations for foreign brokerage accounts, i’d be interested to know more.

The vast majority of americans do not have significant disposable income, and will be primarily investing in their 401k (employer match for a certain %, as well as tax advantage), if at all. Typically employees are locked into whatever brokerage their employer opts into. Without a 401K, they might instead be using an IRA for tax advantage, but I doubt there are many foreign financial institutions that would/could offer a US IRA.

That may mean that convincing your American friends to move accounts could be difficult (or impossible) vs just having them invest more into foreign funds at their US brokerage(vxus, etc).

  • Paperless-ngx does include OCR, as well as supporting document types (which can have fields, etc) - but there is no built-in way to intelligently extract field values. You can use the python API to access & update the data and fields. So field extraction via your own code is feasible.

Given the large variety in receipt layout & potential for habdwritten totals after tips - I’d encourage part of your workflow to include manual ispection/correction of every processed receipt - or at the bare minimum that you include check-in points where you verify your end balances 100% match after all transactions have been entered, so you can detect & root-cause errors ASAP.

  • We are doomed if we cannot overcome the dual party system. So long as half our representatives are buddy buddy they can easily band together. Change to ranked choice voting/star/etc. Enabling third party candidates to have a fair shot of being voted in will help reduce that power. Revise the balloting system so you cannot blindly vote down ticket for a party, without even knowing your candidate’s name, let alone policies. Speaking of voting, something as simple as printing off an optional validation paper that can be collected by a third party (if the voter wishes) would go a HUGE way to letting citizens double check if there’s been foul play in the numbers. Only by getting past the party system will we ever achieve the changes we need.

No-confidence removal for a significant number of offices, including some semblance of tracking campaign promises & policies and potential removal for actions counter to them (voter initiated, not something representatives can initiate). Giving citizens the option of repealling policies with a high enough % vote.

Strict Term limits, age limits. this includes our supreme court. Evidently we may need something more concrete on third terms for presidents, that includes immediate removal & incarceration for encouraging or attempting.

More controversial, but our government should need to be more transparent/open. While they don’t have to be pefect, our representatives should be decent people. They should be required to be more open, and subject to more scrutiny, than citizens. Obvious shit like their income & taxes paid, buf likely far more transparent. Secret courts, secret legislation cannot and should not exist, regardless of what spycraft garbage is ongoing.

Bill of rights modernization & expansion, strict, decisive penalties for violations. Revocation of citizens united and tough implications for any company found paying significant money to influence legislation/election of legislators.

  • Rural-ish American who’s moved a bit -

Currently my only significant options are national chains like Walmart & Dollar stores which are well known for being bad for their employees AND their communitees. Many of the employees of the former are paid poorly enough they require government assistance to afford groceries from the store they work at.

I’ve lived places with Wincos/Costcos & Market Baskets and those are much mote reasonable places that I’d compare with Aldi. The chairs thing is real when looking at piece of shit places like Walmart & Dollar stores - but I dont remember if MB &| Winco offers chairs to their employees.

There are often larger local chains that can be marginally better (food lion, tops, etc) but often their prices & selection won’t beat out walmart.

Aldi is a nice breath of fresh air for the customers.

I don’t know any employees personally, so I can’t vouch if they are treated significantly better than other stores like Market Basket/Winco.

  • Another interesting one I’ve seen: Upside.

It isn’t necessarily encouraging to buy a specific product, but rather to buy from specific businesses.

To the consumer: they look at the app and buy gas from participating stores, which typically show as having a 5-10 cent discount on gas. The customer uploads a picture of their receipt to confirm the purchase and amount, and get credited that discount. Theres a monthly purvhase target that unlocks a 1 time discount of 30 cents per gallon, etc.

To the business: they pay a fee to Upside to be a participant. Upside promises to only participate with a certain % of stores in the area. It’s likely the business also pays for some of the discounts obtained.

Essentially paying upside is meant to increase sales volume. While a gas station could just dicount their gas, they are paying Upaide to effectively advertise and steer consumers to THAT store. As Upside is national, many custpmers use it, even in unfamiliar areas to choose gas stations.

I say not a specific product, because my understanding is it’s extended to other business categories besides gas.

Market manipulation, ultimately. I’m sure in some part they are sellong your location & purchase data as well.
