  • Parliament on the lowest bill: Yes, disgraceful.

    Court of auditors on the 200€ bill: Well, when do ordinary people use this bill anyway? Conversely, I like the idea of giving a subtle reminder about the Court of Auditors to those who primarily handle high-denomination bills. (Plus, this bill is first in line for being potentially discontinued, like the 500€ before it, so little sense to have more important institutions on it.)


  • Noise consistently activates the stress axis, which governs extremely potent biochemical pathways and thus over time can bring about physical changes easily. Especially to sensitive tissues like nerve tissue. This is well established. It’s similar with disturbed sleep. For Parkinson’s disease specifically, the Guardian article mentions this:

    Existing research has found potential biological pathways that link noise exposure to Parkinson’s disease, largely due to stress responses and disrupted sleep.

    “Potential”, sure, but altogether (i.e. now also including the prospective (!) decade-long (!) cohort study with over three million (!) participants), the causal link is very probable.

    Regarding the magnitude observed here, I admit a hazard ratio of 1.04 (so +4%) is not large. Note, though, that it’s “per interquartile increment of 8.9 dB”. So going up three quartiles (+27 dB, about 7 times as loud) already gives you somewhat above 12% additional risk.

    This is territory where it’s getting relevant for personal and societal decision-making—especially when considering that Parkinson’s is just one disease of many.











  • Doubled compared to what?

    This perhaps answers your question (although the length of the measurement intervals (before/after) is not specified):

    When we launched, the number of people completing the form doubled.


    How did 96% satisfaction get calculated earlier, if there were so many users whose needs were not met?

    The 96% (or whatever the exact threshold is) seems to be a requirement imposed by law, so that it’s probably measured through some external procedure:

    Adding a lot of pressure, this was a regulated monopoly, and if their customer satisfaction dropped below 96% (if I remember correctly) it could result in millions of pounds in fines.




  • Titandioxid ist ein mineralischer Blocker und als solcher afaik nach Stand der Wissenschaft unbedenklich, ähnlich wie Zinkoxid, das m.W. noch besser ist. Bedenklich sind demgegenüber die Sonnencremes mit nichtmineralischen aka “chemischen” Blockern, namentlich Octocrylenen und allem was ähnlich klingt sowie ganz besonders deren Umwandlungsprodukten, wenn die Creme schon ein Jahr rumliegt. (Diese Stoffe sind auch für die Wassersysteme nicht gerade dufte.)








  • Roughly from high level to low level:

    1. uBlock custom filters
    2. Make pages unusable or less attractive by wonky per-site browser or extension settings
    3. IP and DNS blocks on your local machine
    4. Run a DNS proxy on your local machine and block domains with it
    5. Host a pihole server on a different machine, make it your DNS server and block domains there
    6. IP and DNS blocks in your router (if your current one has no option for this, consider buying another, preferably used)

    Best apply the methods arbitrarily, so that you get even more confused about how you might restore access to a given website.

    Options 5 and 6 may be the only viable ones for locking down certain smartphones or tablets.
