That’s why if a fine does not exceed the benefit the company gained from it, it’s not a deterrent but a cost of business.

I blame the 24 hour news cycle and end of the Fairness Doctrine. It has allowed editorializing and “spinning” of news stories as opposed to being factual and objective.
Reddit only started hosting images and videos a couple years ago. That alone would massively add to costs. It’s self inflicted and seems it was planned in an effort to keep people on the platform instead of linking to imgur to view the picture.
They brought the added overhead on themselves
