I switched over to Jellyfin 99% of the time, because it has hardware acceleration feature for free and also plays endlessly. Occasionally i still use plex because jellyfin sometimes fails to play certain encodings on Roku.
I’d say its a bandaid to bad design
For items like Ammo in RE4Remake for example, why put them in barrels that blend in with the environment? If your graphics engine is too photorealistic, maybe put them somewhere else where they don’t blend in? Or just degrade the photorealism slightly so that the barrels stand out?
For environmental interactions, like ladders, its not hard to make them stand out. Use lighting, level design, or narrative to drive your players. Just slapping yellow paint on everything is embarrassing.
I really do dislike the ‘Yellow Paint’ phenomenon of modern games. Its so infantilizing and really pulls you out of the game experience. Why look at anything that doesn’t have yellow paint anymore? you can’t interact with it…
The story isn’t usually the problem for me; its the execution of it.
Disco Elysium would be the best example. ‘Tales of’/Trails games being some of the worst for me. I don’t mind hero’s journey stories, i just don’t like my time being wasted.
