whenever i have an issue with navigating to something, i contribute to it to make sure that navigation error would never happen again. fully recommend the process, its very satisfying to do, makes you feel like a conquistador mapping the hidden cenote in which resides mcdonalds

I use comaps, I feel like OSM isnt as good at cars as google maps, but it beats google maps easily in bikes and pedestrian traffic, like one time i plotted out a route where i could sit on a bench (which are shown on map) every 5 minutes or so on comaps. on trains its kind of a wash in comparison to google maps. the biggest issue is when you want to do a spur of the moment thing like ‘eat at a nondescript restaurant closest to me’, openstreetmap data here isnt great and the built in search engine for a nondescript restaurant isnt great, you cant write ‘closest vietnamese restaurant’ into the searchbar.
also one time i fell off a cliff and had no signal while hiking and comaps got me reoriented and on the right path in a no cell service area. if i used google maps it wouldnt have had the hikers trail i found on comaps either.

its when you kinda half ass it and make a bunch of bumble bees very happy by doing so, unfortunately america hates bees and biodiversity so they outlawed clover lawns in nearly every hoa despite it being the 1950s ideal lawn and requires basically no water or fertilizer to look great

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Best open source "hdmi stick" computer ala chromecast that can receive remote presses?
7·7 days agoyeah i might just load up one of my old phones and replace its default launcher via adb with https://github.com/LeanBitLab/LtvLauncher
maybe i can 3d print some sort of housing that makes the cable mess less of a nightmare, and i’d certainly need a usb hub of some kind to increase its compatibility with remotes.
kde’s plasma bigscreen also piqued my interest but it just doesnt look as simple to set up on bad hardware
Sorry, all you get is a Ukraine that is in debt for the next 100 years as Euro-American megacorporations pillage the land and opportunists purchase its women and children for their own satisfaction. The men, of course, are sent as mercenaries into a neverending meatgrinder against whatever enemy we decide they should fight this week.

7·7 days agobasically the issue with this method is i like to travel light and I use my other devices for other things e.g. work, kvm switches, etc which all require their own setup and unplugging and replugging and interrupting my SO’s tv isnt great. ive used a usb-c to hdmi cord to get things going via my phone but this whole idea is cumbersome whereas an hdmi stick and remote is a very elegant and compact solution.
IF you had a functional social safety net, however in this circumstance you would eat shit, pay taxes, a family in Palestine would die, and a rich person would have a couple extra dollars towards the next extravagant pedophilia convention in Florida

Privacy@lemmy.ml•EU Commission bans top officials from using Signal groups
15·2 months agoThe decision was made according to the report after the Commission became aware of the group’s existence last month and deemed the risk of compromise too high. While there is no evidence yet that communication has actually been intercepted, the threat situation has escalated. Just recently, a private phone call between a journalist and an EU official was intercepted and published. Insiders also report sophisticated phishing attempts. These were intended to trick cabinet members into revealing their Signal PIN codes, thus causing them to lose control of their accounts.
looks like theyre concerned about targeted phishing attacks and organizations being unable to control user accounts from the top down (and thus read their communications) in order to reinstate and do damage control surrounding a negligent user after an attack. ultimately the user is getting tricked into revealing their password, so… human element. perhaps matrix would be best for large organizations like this, for individuals however simplex chat has no identifier tied to the account and in order to compromise a chat theyd need direct access to the computer or the simplex database export afaik, but all programs are vulnerable in that way.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How would you respond to the statement "Trans women are biologically male" ?
91·2 months agothere are many types of chromosomes outside of xy and xx. and they are about as common as being trans. shit, its fairly common for karyotype tests to come back with only an x for people past a certain age, a lot of people lose their second sex chromosome over time. this would make many people have an unverifiable ‘birth sex’ beyond just what is physically in their pants
even if i did have an xy chromosome (i dont even know if i do) being biologically male or female is nebulous. “biological men” dont have big feminine tits and estrogen in them for decades, but i do. so at minimum i am something not phenotypically or biologically male or female despite identifying as a trans woman

Perspective is weird
