Wenn Höcke ein ausgelassener Mensch wäre, ein dröhnendes Alphatier, taktlos im Umgang, aus der Hüfte schießend, unempfindlich und grob, dann würden ihm frühere Weggefährten glauben, dass er sich vergaloppiert. Dass ihm Dinge rausrutschen und er versehentlich eine SA-Parole ruft. Cutting the ring on a designated place would allow to remove the ring from a finger in case of an emergency. But you can’t cut the ring in a random place, because of the battery. It would be helpful when there is a marking where to cut the ring safely. The ring would be destroyed anyway. But a functioning finger is probably worth more than this gadget.

Imagine your ring needs to be cut off while you are in the hospital: without knowing where the battery is placed it is a guessing game for the doctors where to cut the ring. This is a risk, because when the battery gets cut it will react with the ambient oxygen in the air, causing a fire which is hard to put out, since it can’t be extinguished easily.

This is a very good question from the comments of the ifixit article. It would have been smart, if that “cut here” feature would have been included into the concept. It would have underlined that this indeed is a smart device.

Another thing about rings in general: some injuries can cause your finger to inflame. Then the ring acts as a tourniquet, cutting off blood flow. If the EMT or doctor can’t cut off the ring, they have to amputate the finger. This came up a lot when people were making rings out of titanium or carbon fiber or other high-strength materials. This is really bad. It shows that LLMs cannot be trusted, since there is no corrective instance above them. According to this video (German), Microsoft, who has been questioned about this incident, claims that the Copilot feature is to be seen as entertainment rather than a search engine or anything what is considered as a serious source. Although search results regarding the victim have been deleted after they had reached out to Microsoft, the same wrong search results re-appeared a few days later.

With the raise of fake news over the last decade, combined with a growing lack of media literacy, such feature can destroy lives, especially when people tend to ignore the sources. A victim barely has any possibility to proof that these facts are wrong and a result of a hallucinating LLM. And even if - the internet doesn’t forget. Fake news will be circleing around as well as legit news.

Edit: According to Copilot, among the crimes he supposedly has committed there is an allegation that he is a child molester. That makes it even worse!

All of this applies to many niche communities. In Germany, especially the older forums that are around since the internet became widly popular show such behavior. Take HiFi- forums for example: If your plugs are not made with gold, you are doing it wrong. Also, if you want to spend money for a hobby, don’t bother to start if you are not willing to spend at least an unreasonable ridiculous ammount of Euros.

These enthusiast also complain about a lack of new members. It’s the nobody wants to work anymore sentiment, but with niche hobby communities.

German dubs are actually top notch compared to other countries

This is true for movie productions. They are dubbed well, even to a point where jokes and plays on words are translated as well. On the other hand, cartoons are not. They lack of something that makes them unwatchable when dubbed - I think it’s because some of the play on words and jokes are missing, also the dubbed voices differ extremely from the original. Such thing can make a character appear and be percieved very different, compared to the original. If cartoonn are availiable in original language (English), I’ll prefer that.

Sadly, in this world you accomplish nothing for being nice and considerate. If you want to leave an impact (anything - a new invention, a new product, a new idea, anything with impact to contemporary culture) you have to bully yourself to the top, including stealing ideas and screwing people over, as well as to exploit people. All “great” people who accomplished something did that: Gates (Microsoft), Jobs (Apple), Musk (Tesla, Twitter), Bezos (Amazon), Thiel (PayPal, Palantir), Zuckerberg (Meta), Huffman (Reddit), as well as many politicans. It’s a personality treat.

Back in the early 2000s I bought my first own car. It had a radio with cassatte. I had a mixtape that I carried around, with a walkman (albeit not the original one from Sony). When I drove the car home - stil with temporary number plates, because I needed to register the car to my name - the song Turn The Page played a few minutes into the drive. I will always associate this song with that particular event.

Auch spielt ein großer Teil des gegenseitigen Umgangs und der generellen Arbeitskultur in solchen Berufsfeldern eine Rolle. Gegen die Sonne gibt es z.B. Sonnencreme, die ja auch, wie im Artikel beschrieben, vom Arbeitgeber gestellt wird. Um sich aber nicht dummen Sprüchen von Kollegen oder Vorgesetzten auszusetzen, und um scheinbare körperliche Stärke zu demonstrieren, wird möglicherweise eher auf notwendige Pausen oder das Eincremen mit Sonnenschutz verzichtet. Schließlich war es früher auch mal im Sommer warm.

Ich bin selbst oft auf Baustellen unterwegs, auch habe ich ein Handwerk gelernt. Es gehört oftmals noch zum guten Ton, wenn man keinen Helm aufhat, keinen Gehörschutz trägt, oder keine Schutzbrille. In meiner Lehre hatte ich glücklicherweise eine vernünftige PSA und es wurde darauf geachtet, z.B. auch beim Flexen eine Schutzbrille zu tragen. Allerdings habe ich mir bei der Arbeit auf Baustellen damals (ca. 1999/ 2000) schon Sprüche von anderen Gewerken anhören müssen, weil ich bei solchen Arbeiten eine Schutzbrille getragen habe.

Die Arbieitskultur scheint sich in dieser Hinsicht kaum geändert zu haben. Es scheint immer noch die Haltung “ich hatte damals auch nix, also warum soll es denen heute besser gehen?” vorzuherrschen.

Interressanterweise gilt dies bei Sicherheitsschuhen nicht: Hierbei scheint es sich um eine Art Erkennungsmerkmal zu handeln, dass man zu denen gehört, die besonders tough zu seien scheinen.

Um wieder auf den Inhalt des Artikels zurückzukommen: Es muss sich erst die Arbeitskultur - also der generelle Umgang miteinander - ändern. Wenn niemand dafür diskriminiert wird, einen Körper zu schützen, dann erst sind die Arbeiter vor den Gefahren, die mit der sich anbahnenden Klimakatastrophe einhergehen, geschützt!

I do not say that all laws are futile. The difference with this particular measurement is that it is odd to me, that a no-weapon zone is being established, as it is quite unusual that Germans carry around weapons in general. At least not where I live. People carrying around weapons of any kind is just not a thing here.

There are other laws, speed restrictions for instance. I get that there is a necessity to enforce such thing, as people have cars and tend to drive faster than they should. Speeding with a car is more common than carrying a weapon. That’s why this law makes sense, as it adresses the issue right there. Speeding doesn’t have an underlying issue that causes drivers to speed.

The thing what makes it futile in my opinion is that a restriction in carrying weapons does not solve the underlying issues (the root causes of socio-economic inequality, among others) that probably lead to harming others with knives. It’s just treating the symptoms, not the root cause.

This would be the use case, where you would break the law, when entering such restriction zone. Unless, of course, your skin tone has the right shade, as police unfortunately does things like racial profiling. If pale, you were on your way to a cooking party - if darker-skinned, you luckily were caught in the act!

Fair enough, I didn’t think of that. What you described is the intended use for pocket knives, MacGyver style.

What I thought of when writing my comment were kind of hunting knives. No one needs that inside an urban environment.

The question is: why would anyone carry a knife in the first place? I can’t think of any reason. Personally, such law wouldn’t have any impact on me, because I don’t carry a knife with me. I can see the intention with such law, and it probably might help to percieve a more secure enviroment.

If someone wanted to do some stabbing inside a party district, such law wouldn’t stop them - unless one has to pass through a security checkpoint (which to my knowledge are not a thing).

This is a futile attempt to establish safety, and it is done so that it can be claimed that something has been done.

If some person has the intention to do any harm to others, this person would not be stopped by any restriction to carry any weapon.

The real issues lay much deeper: A growing number of refugees and asylum seekers that want to work, but are prohibited to do so, but at the same time these are competing in an already tight housing market. Raising costs of living, growing inequality, growing envy and a part of the population which is on the brink of shiftig into a nazi movement, with a growing resentment to foreign people. It takes more than putting up a sign that says that weapons are forbidden beyond this point to solve these problems.

Also, in Germany there is no reason ever to walk around with waepons. Compared to other parts of the world it is pretty safe here.

Putting up a sign that states that weapon are forbidden would have the same impact as putting up a sign that forbids wild fires in the forest or flooding near a body of water.

As an addition to the translation tool (context menu in Firefox) it would be nice to have a conversion tool for the conversion of temperatures and lengths. I know there are addons for this purpose, but last time i checked they weren’t good or they were a hassle to use. Opera nailed it a few years ago with a little pop-up window when text got highlighted. It recognized when it was a SI unit. This is a feature that I have not seen in any other browser yet.

Es ist schon sinnvoll, etwas Bargeld (ein paar hundert Euro) zuhause zu haben - als Backup. Mir hat das mal den Hintern gerettet:

Als ich eines Tages Geld am Geldautomaten meiner Bank abholen wollte, hat sich dessen Software aufgehängt und aus Sicherheitsgründen wurde auch noch die Karte einbehalten. Zusätzlich habe ich diese noch sperren lassen, um zu vermeiden, dass die Karte beim nächsten Benutzer wieder ausgeworfen wird. Es hat fast 10 Wochen gedauert, bis ich eine Ersatzkarte erhalten habe, weil das alles während der Lockdown-Zeit passiert ist. Hätte ich nicht genügend Bargeld zu hause gehabt, wäre mein Alltag deutlich interressanter geworden.

Oder das andere Mal, als aufgrund eines fehlerhaften Zertifikates ein Großteil der Kartenlesgeräte für ein paar Wochen ausgefallen sind. Hier konnte ich dann einfach auf Bargeldzahlung ausweichen.

Mittlerweile zahle ich überwiegend bargeldlos. Meine hauptsächliche Bargeldquelle ist inzwischen das Einlösen des Pflaschenpfands (ca. 10 € alle 2 Wochen).

Bei Tempo 130 ist der Verbrauch von E-Autos viel geringer

Ebenso bei Verbrenern. Der Verbrauch steigt mit der Geschwindigkeit. Ich habe dies selbst einmal getestet (90% Autobahn): 1 Woche lang mit durchschnittlich 140 km/h gefahren --> 5,8 l/100 km - ansonsten fahre ich durchschnittlich 120 km/h --> 4,8 l/100 km. Eine Reduktion der Geschwindigkeit um ca. 20 km/h spart ca. 1 l/100 km ein (zumindest bei meinem Kleinwagen).

Wenn jetzt ein Tempolimit etabliert würde (und dessen Einhaltung dann auch konsequent kontrolliert würde), dann käme man sicherlich schnell zu dem Schluss, dass man gar keine leistungsstarken und hochmotorisierten Fahrzeuge mehr bräuchte, da jede Schrottkarre der letzten 20 Jahre in der Lage ist, zumindest die Richtgeschwindigkeit zu erreichen. Das ist nicht gut für so kleine Startups wie VW, Mercedes, BMW,…, die dann in ein paar Jahren gerettet werden müssen, so wie heute Karstad/Galeria gerettet wird.

Wahrscheinlich wäre es aber eher so, dass man jetzt heult und zetert und wenn tatsächlich ein Tempolimit etabiert hat, dann fragt man sich im Nachhinein, wieso man das nicht schon viel früher gemacht hat. Ähnlich wie bei der Einführung des Katalysators, des Sicherheitsgurtes, des Airbags, von Kindersitzen, etc.
