As for where to buy books, I’ve recently heard of Libreture, which have DRM-free books (see other DRM-free book source), though its database might be lacking because it’s rather new.
It’s a bloated JavaScript app. The version 2 even required Adobe AIR. Also it’s not packaged for GNU/Linux.
There are always a risk of losing money for either loaning or investing, especially if you don’t know about that stuff.
