Reddit quarantined (and might soon ban) the most active communist subreddit, and one of the very few non-western-supremacist ones left.

We’ve gotten dozens of new applications, and are approving them as quickly as we can.

    I am so glad to be here and accepted in this community. As long as we’re together, it doesn’t matter where we are! And people will look back and wonder why some of us stayed on ‘reddit’ or any other top major platform owned by a huge corporation. I love all of you and I am so relieved that we have active spaces for us.

      Honestly I was waiting for this happen as the lurker I was for the past year, because I didn’t want to post on Reddit anymore. thank you mods and people who worked to build this lemmy instance a long time ago so we could bounce back quickly.

    As a former r/CTH poster and hexbear head, welcome to the club! 🍻 Having the rug pulled like this is truly chaotic, but it’s good news that y’all already have a backup ready and don’t have to do a month long hackathon while putting out constant fires in a 10,000 member Discord lifeboat. While the new website is nowhere near as busy as the former subreddit, the independence of having our own infrastructure developed and maintained by trusted comrades is worth it. At the end of the day, Reddit set us free.

    I’m hoping things go as smoothly as possible for y’all. Also, Madeline Albright is dead! Let’s fucking go!

    Hello, friends! Times are uncertain and in flux but I look forward to this journey with all of you.

    As one of the older GenZedong users (I honestly thought it meant “General” Zedong like some kind of militant movement, sorry for crashing your kiddie table) I remember when we all had to gather on niche forums or Usenet or gasp! email discussion lists. Modern social media is convenient, having everything in one place, but that also makes us very vulnerable when those who own the commons decide to crack down.

    The corporate coup d’etat is complete and no longer even hidden. It will take some effort, but we can still be together in comradeship and good intention. Let us look at it as opportunity, rather than setback.

      Yep, we can’t forget that principled communists will always be at the forefront of science and tech fields. Reddit and silicon valley might be a profit-making machine for now, but they can’t beat us in the long run… history and humanity are on our side.

      This. The fact that we had been able to stay on a fed-controlled centralized platform for so long is a miracle, but what this shows now is that we’ve become relevant enough to be dangerous.

          It genuinely does scare me, because as principled communists we still need to agitate where the masses are, and do everything we can to prevent them slipping into anti-communism. But it increasingly looks like that’s going away… US media is doing everything it can to push us into WW3 with Russia and China.

        Yeah, quarantine is literally part of the toolbox for sanctioning certain types of attention for a given subreddit. They take that “attention is currency” stuff real seriously. Simulate a market by lending moderators attention from your users. Those simulations automate the process of creating and maintaining influencers and “communities”, which ideally maximizes the amount of attention you continue to engage with and give them. They’re rigging a market they control and if it starts to go bad for them they just cut you off.

    Just FYI, we have anecdotal reports from people on Hexbear that Twitter and Facebook have also been wiping out and censoring leftist accounts/pages since yesterday. This is how it happens. They come in waves and seem to like getting it done in one big batch

    Anybody just got their reddit account banned? My account for I don’t know 8+ years? 30k karma? Just got nuked in the middle of commenting in r/genzedong. So uninstalling this app now lmao
