Of all the things that would alienate Luther from modern Protestantism “Being too shitty to minorities” is so not one of them. We know what side he took on the jacqueries, we know how he felt about ethnic and religious minorities. If anything this is entirely in the spirit of Luther.

So is this gonna be the New Atheist bit we’re all supposed to humor? Rightly shitting on Protestantism and its evolution into a super-capitalist death cult does not in anyway imply the crimes of the Catholic Church are absolved

But we as materialists also acknowledge reality; the Pope is lending this significant voice to the normalization of both pro-Palestinian sentiment and anti-imperialism, no matter how contrived

And unless someone can present a single fucking comment by a Hexbear regular that actually excuses the crimes of the Catholic Church and isn’t just a meme, an observation of observable reality or a theory post on liberation theology, then this bit where Hexbear is supposedly pro-Catholic Church is just a radlib, Ultra-brained insult no better than ragebait

I have seen more than one person, more than one time, try to support a real ‘the Catholic Church was a liberatory organization’ thesis over in the Christianity comm. I wouldn’t say it ever sticks, nor that these people stick around for that long.

However, as what seems like one of the only really ex-Catholics here, the Catholic Church has consistently been on the wrong side of history pretty much since it’s incorporation. That doesn’t mean Protestants were ever on the right side of history (though I will always have sympathy for the Anabaptists and their descendents, the Mennonites and the Amish).

The only reason it isn’t on the wrong side here is because it is a dying organization, and going against the popular opinion of pretty much the entire world, along with the majority of Catholics outside of the conservative U.S., is a terrible marketing move. The Church knows that the U.S. is a long lost cause, they don’t even bother trying here anymore. Even the deep dish pope knows that much.

Idk though. Putting too much thought into this will literally boil your brain, like trying to parce how Vance supposedly believes what he believes.

Edit: Also because Israel has literally been bombing Catholic Churches in Gaza. I’m pretty sure that’s really what caused them to care at all.

Yeah but what does that mean? This is just a vague description; without the context or hell even the content, I can’t make a judgement, and I’m sorry but the extraordinary claim that Hexbear is crawling with leftist crytpo-Opus Dei members requires links and proof

(though I will always have sympathy for the Anabaptists and their descendents, the Mennonites and the Amish).

I mean if someone was being uncharitable and a little radlib, couldn’t they interpret and speculate on your “sympathy” in all types of negative and toxic ways?

Edit: Also because Israel has literally been bombing Catholic Churches in Gaza. I’m pretty sure that’s really what caused them to care at all.

I mean yes, like I said it’s contrived on an institutional level, but that doesn’t matter, it’s still the right thing to do and it’s still support that’s desperately needed to help stop a genocide

              1. Nobody is saying that this place is full of leftist Opus-Dei (?) or crypto-Catholics. Just because you are exaggerating the claims, doesn’t mean the Catholic sympathy steak isn’t extremely present in any Christian discourse around here. It is more present than any discourse on Islam. And sure, maybe it is just memes, and I’m too literal, idk. I don’t really care that it exists, other than I feel obligated to remind people that the Catholic Church is not actually good, and again, maybe that is whatever mental illness I have being a party pooper.

              2. I genuinely don’t give a shit what the rad libs think, because their opinions are two inches deep at best. It’s like caring what chuds think. I’m not gonna structure every little thing I say around the most uncharitable interpretation. Might as well not say anything at all at that point.

              3. It sure is the right thing to do.

Ok, but there’s been weird New Atheist revival on the more lib corners of Lemmy, and I’m so sick of it.

No, religion is not the source of all the world’s problems. No, everyone on earth being atheists wouldn’t make it a utopia. No, Islam is not uniquely backwards, you’re just fucking racist.

When you let a select group be the “representatives of god” it turns out they get up to some freaky shit. Almost like this god thing is part of the problem.

The problem is that they are not real and are instead human ideas, and thus have all the same issues that humans have. A real, good, powerful god simply would not let organisations like the Catholic or Protestant churches (riddled with pedophilia and SA, constantly covering up for it, complicit in crimes against humanity all over the world and throughout history) present themselves as that God’s representation on earth. I assume the same goes for all large religious organisations, but am not familiar enough with any of them to say.

          • Worshipping the nuclear furnace at the center of our solar system makes sense because it literally gives us life and we are made of the same stuff. It’s worthy precisely because it can’t give a fuck about humans above fish or trees. We all need it to live and it will destroy us all when it dies.

A “good god” is just a benevolent king, and not worthy of worship from the jump.
