I’ll be 60 years old in 2028 and for once I want the opportunity to vote for someone younger than me in the general election.

Can we stop jumping forward to 2028 and assuming we’ll have free elections?

Blanche is going to undo the right of states to enforce their own voting regulations via the Supreme Court.

They don’t play by the rules and nothing holds them accountable. When you don’t enforce laws, they’re worthless.

We’re likely going to have one of two options: Find a way to revolt or live under facism for decades.

Looking from the outside, if AOC can become the Democratic nominee for 2028 president, I’d believe the USA has a chance to recover from the Trump disease. She would be one who could show how leftwing policy can produce results like Presidenta Claudia Sheinbaum. The USA needs more than business-as-usual politics. Even if AOC is president there will be a multitude of forces to fight against including Israel, Russia, billionaires and the Epstein class and the fact that fully rebuilding a competent government from gutted ruins will take a bit of time. If a plurality of voters pick fascism again over a woman as president, I will genuinely start believing the USA isn’t worth saving at that point.

This year’s midterms will be a good barometer to see how progressive Dems perform in swing states (Maine, Michigan etc.) that can help determine how much of a chance she would have.

There are a solid number of issues that AOC can immediately get certain segments of Republicans onside without compromising her positions at all: one would be to promise to release every file collected in the Epstein case, within the first month of entering office.

The step before that is a Dem primary but the current slate of prospectives really aren’t all that compelling.

No argument against her being great at the job, I just seriously doubt she can build a campaign that could actually win the White House. The DNC is already taking steps to prevent progressives, let alone socialists from winning the primary. If she were to win the primary, the establishment dems would very likely sabotage her at every turn, and happily lose any election just to prevent her from winning.

It’s way too far out to tell anything really. It’s going to be decided between mid terms and the next primary season. If she’s going to go after the presidency, she’ll have to have Jeffries and Schumer locked down before the primary, or it won’t even be worth the attempt.

So far, she would be my absolute top pick.

    However.

I am worried not even so much about her politics (with which I agree), but that I don’t think the US is progressive enough for vote for a woman as President.

That said, I grant that Obama won.

But we’ve seen a couple of moderate women run and lose.

The fascist propaganda machine is strong, but I think it’s especially strong against women.

I think that’s fucking stupid, but I think that’s reality.

That said… damn I hope we don’t end up with Newsom. And frankly, while I voted for Harris in the general… I hope we don’t end up with her. We already know a lot of people don’t like her and she did struggle to have appeal on a personal level.

I don’t see any really great choices right now.

I wish we could have AOC. But I also know we’d be back to Obama levels of bullshittery from the fascists, although they will also do that for any Democrat - like Biden who was generally fine enough (if not nearly as progressive as we need).

    Meh.

Voting for electability in the primaries is what gets us voting for the lesser of evils in the general.

        I strongly do-not-disagree.

As always, though, we have to think about the general because if someone runs that we love but we are pretty damn sure will lose (which is NOT what I’m saying about AOC, I am speaking 100% in generalities here), then in such a case running that person is letting the fascists almost certainly win.

That is a practical and pragmatic concern.

But to me, that means NOT that we need to run the shitty right-wing Dem option… rather, we need to try and build support for the candidate we prefer by monetary donations and donations of time (knock on doors, text, etc) and do out best to figure out how much likely support is out there and run them when we have a real chance, and maybe don’t run them if we don’t have a real chance.

So not only do I not disagree with you, but I have strong feelings about a “Yes, but also:” as well :)

I want progressive representation. But secondarily, I also do want the best practical representation. It’s all a risk, and when the risk is worth it, GO GO GO.

AOC 2028 seems to be talked about by the same people who keep talking about Trump 2028.

    Coincidence?

I think their implication was that the right thinks she’s too extreme to actually win, so they’d prefer she be the candidate. This is, of course, a product of their absurdly skewed views of what “extreme” is. She’s no tankie, for example.

AOC, Zohran, Bernie, and basically every ‘left-wing’ politician we have in the US besides probably DAC would just be a normal, maybe slightly left of center politician in Europe. We are so backwards here
