I was glancing through the mod log and saw these two entries. Conspiracy theory communities were both removed for violating rule #3.

What are these rules? If I look in the side bar, rule #3 on both lemmy.ml and sh.itjust.works to me looks like no porn. So why were conspiracy theory communities not allowed? That seems like kind of a community that shouldn’t be an issue on Lemmy… are conspiracy theory subs really something that won’t be allowed here? Honestly that’s kind of disturbing to see already…

It’s not the rules on those servers, but the rules on the server you belong to, i.e lemmy.world. Looking at their main site, their rule 3 is as follows:

Wow. Honestly this makes me seriously contemplate my move to Lemmy. I thought lemmy.world was at least a free speech endorsing server. So now we have the two biggest Lemmy instances out there that are clearly against free speech. Lemmy.ml is moderated by pro CCP mods that remove anything anti-china, and lemmy.world can’t even tolerate a sub about conspiracy theories (which we should all know have a tendency of coming true the past few years) and is therefore already starting with stifling free speech.

Yeah, go start your own instance… Not everyone wants to run their own instance just to be able to browse communities on other instances that your current instance doesn’t agree with.

Yeah… This is really putting a sour taste in my mouth about Lemmy already.

Sounds like a dogwhistle to me, especially since you provided no further info. Sounds like you need to start your own instance if you want to post BS.

This isn’t a community where I feel it’s appropriate to get into those kind of topics. You’re welcome to PM me if you’re actually curious what I’m talking about.

But regardless, I was hoping Lemmy would be a good space for free thought. But it’s quickly turning out not to be that way.

The “start your own instance” is twofold. You can indeed move away if you don’t like the rules one instance imposes. But at the same time, being an admin, you get the freedom not to associate with stuff you find problematic. You can’t expect an instance owner to pay for server space to host others’ whims.

From a more personal point of view, I’m really happy that I don’t have to engage with QAnon BS while browsing. It works well for the users too.

You do realize that conspiracy is far more than qanon stuff, right? It was an interesting sub to read from time to time on Reddit.

And yeah, I get “just run your own instance”, but not everyone wants to deal with their own instance just to be able to freely browse communities without random censorship. I was hoping Lemmy wouldn’t be that way. Don’t know what it is about some people being so unable to tolerate opposing views from their own…

            Note the “similarly disproven” section.

If there are fun, interesting, not comically disproven conspiracy theories/communities, I imagine they’d be welcome.

Don’t know what it is about some people being so unable to tolerate opposing views from their own…

No one should have to host your stupid nonsense. Just because I have a party, doesn’t mean I have to invite you.

We want good conspiracies, not the dangerously stupid stuff. Hence, no Q nonsense.

So… from what I’m getting from that post… everyone likes to talk shit about reddit having a big ownership from a Chinese company that is exerting Chinese censorship on reddit… and now we’re (well, I’m registered at lemmy.world, but subscribe to a lot of communities on .ml) sitting here on an alternate site that… is ALSO exerting Chinese censorship! 😂

Well the more worrying part is someone in another response said this was the lemmy.world mods banning those subs from appearing on lemmy.world.

Makes me wonder about lemmy honestly. They’re making it very difficult to find an instance that is 1) reliable, 2) open to free speech and thought. With instances randomly blocking others, blocking certain communities, etc…

I mean, am I going to have to spin up my own instance just to browse Lemmy without random censorship of other instances and communities?

If hatred is what you seek, you’re on your own.

You know we can see through your whole “ah shucks, I was just wanting a little freedom” shtick, right? No one falls for that shit anymore. You know your opinions are vile, you just want to be able to ensnare vulnerable users into your bigot factory.

Lemmy.world (where OP’s account is) has a rule 3 stating:

No posts or comments supporting or promoting QAnon related content or similarly disproven conspiracy theories. Moderators have sole discretion to decide if a post violates this rule. Birds are real. The Earth is round. Get over it.

See https://mastodon.world/about (both world servers are maintained by the same admin team, and lemmy.world links to that page for its rules).

Can admins defederate from specific communities on other instances?

That’s rule 3 for Lemmy.world, but these two instances are on Lemmy.ml and sh.itjust.works respectively.

Your terminology is super confused, but the lemmy.world admins did remove those specific communities on lemmy.world in particular. They’re unaffected on other servers, and other communities from these servers continue to replicate to lemmy.world unimpacted.

I knew users can block specific communities from their feeds, but I figured the admin level was just defederating from the instance as a whole, like beehaw did.

I don’t run an instance and don’t have a lot of experience with exactly what’s possible, but the screenshots in this post pretty clearly show community removal and not defederation… and the communities aren’t removed on their home servers. So I infer the lemmy.world admins must have been able to do it… and did so.

You’re forgetting the most important rule of the internet, enacted in 2020 and largely unspoken, but widely followed:

No controversial thought. Everything must abide by the hivemind. Sure, the hivemind might extol the virtues of free thought and expression, but actions speak louder than words.

Thanks to the massive worldwide propaganda campaign of 2020, very few corners of the internet are safe from virtue-signaling, wannabe-woke control freaks who can’t stand the thought of others disagreeing with their force-fed worldviews, because they mistakenly believe that such ideas are “dangerous.” 🙄

Presumably you could find an instance that allows conspiracy theories, or get together and start one dedicated to that. The subs may not be federated, idk how that works exactly.

The opposite woke is asleep. The opposite of virtue-signaling is vice-signalling.

And we have moderation for a reason, lest the instances become Nazi bars

What are you evening going on about? No one has stopped you from have a controversial thought. However, for some reason you think you should be shielded from defending your controversial thoughts. You can say and believe whatever you want but you can’t play the victim when people call you out for being the piece of shit you are. Keep on doing your thing but the rest of us aren’t going to be tolerant of your shit views.
