Closing down nuclear so that Germany can double down on coal usage is a real galaxy brain move https://globalnews.ca/news/9598238/rbc-german-coal-mine-finance-deal-climate-change/
It might sounds odd but they should invest into renewables even more now. Imo Fukushima disaster has been probably underestimated by global news, just think of the huge quanrity of contaminated water that they’re releasing into the ocean right now, no more sushi! Seriously, something has not probably been disclosed to the public: how is it possible that A. Merkel, a physics always pro-nuclear energy, has changed her mind so fast?
Except that’s not what’s actually happening. Meanwhile, Fukushima is in no way representative of modern nuclear reactors. Germany also doesn’t have tsunamis last I checked. Meanwhile, the amount of pollution released from fossil fuels Germany is using to replace nuclear eclipses even the damage Fukushima has done.
Merkel is a politician, using what Merkel says as a guideline is pretty silly given that as you yourself admit she was originally pro nuclear energy which was a position based on actual facts.
We should see if she was interviewed about this topic and check if she doesn’t lie
Es heißt ‘tschüss’, nicht ‘au revoir’, ihr Eier!
The article talks about the joint efforts of France and Germany to build the Finnish nuclear plant: they forgot to mention that the French manufacturer went bankrupt https://finlandpolitics.org/2021/01/10/a-bankrupt-which-could-cost-finland-hundreds-of-millions/
wow. And that’s even without the added cost to society of tending to those power plants for hundreds of years…
Replaced by worse alternatives. We need more nuclear, not less. https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/985436
On the paper it’s not that worse https://www.euronews.com/green/2022/12/22/the-eu-has-approved-a-28-billion-german-renewable-energy-scheme-but-is-it-fair
Not so simple, even if they turn off the nuclear power plants, they will have another 20-30 years left until they have dismantled and decontaminated these plants, this is going to cost them billions and also with thousands of tons of radioactive debris, which, like the rest waste so far no one knows where to put it safely for the next 30,000 generations.
Like Italy (but we’re a special human species) where we are still paying billions to keep running (while dismantling them at the same time) our power plants which never produced a single kWh
