- “Nauctis: The Sunken Realm” is noted to be the first set without any creatures with flying.
- “Kamigawa: Titanbreach” is a kaiju vs mech set, with creatures from the monster plane of Ikoria invading the cyberpunk setting of Kamigawa.
- “Zhalfir” is a plane associated with the character Teferi. It was trapped in a pocket dimension for awhile, but a recent storyline brought it back.
There will be three “universes beyond” crossover sets. At least one of them is expected to be Marvel, possibly two. An X-Men set is assumed for either 2027 or 2028.
Upcoming sets in 2026 are “The Hobbit”, “Reality Fracture”, and “Star Trek”.

When it spilled over into his undeath, he stopped calling it his “life’s work”.
more Marvel™ tie-ins??? fucking assholes
I dunno how the current mtg fans are doing it? I gave up MTG years ago because I could see how bad the increased set releases was going to make keeping up with formats, and the tie ins were obviously gonna get really tasteless. A lot of the fantasy-oriented crossover sets feel “okayish”, but on the whole it’s esthetically really lame.
Honestly the vibe overall with MTG reminds me of the kind of gross monetization you see in F2P games… except mtg was already an expensive habit. Maybe it’s not so bad as it seems like the collector boosters push so much pack openings that the basic versions of cards are fairly affordable. Dunno, before I quit I was getting into buying the really high quality Chinese fakes to pass off for in store play, but it pissed me off reading so many people in the community who openly talked about wanting to find and snitch on players doing that.
A lot of regulars who I’ve known for decades have actually quit. UB has brought in a lot of new people, but even they lament about Magic’s 90s storylines being a thing of the past. It seems like no one actually likes UB, except for a franchise they do like, which they jump all over, without realizing that’s what everyone else is doing.
WotC may also be juking their stats on the success of each UB. Their distribution model is they sell to vendors way below MSRP, who then sell at MSRP or higher. Once product leaves Hasbro’s print shops, they mark that as a sale. Whether or not customers actually buy that product isn’t their problem. If another local game store goes under with a bunch of unsold stock, who cares? A new one is always being opened by some naive late-20s/early-30s guy who thinks running a very specialized pawnshop is the same as being good at games (nevermind if he’s actually good at the game).
In other words, WotC sells a $60 booster box to a game store. The game store sells it to players for $120. If the box never sells, Hasbro still marks it down they made a sale, because they did. So when they say “best-selling set of all time” for the fourth set in a row, they don’t mean “players bought more of this set than anything else.” They mean “we made vendors buy more product than we printed last set and threatened to pull their distribution/sanctioned event status if they didn’t buy what we demanded.”
Should this probably be illegal or raise some questions from shareholders? Probably. But they’re making more money than they’ve ever seen. A decade ago, Hearthstone was pulling in more each month than all of Hasbro annually combined. MtG and D&D are the only things keeping them afloat, with D&D getting less and less profitable each year.
i had already quit but this fortnite marvel shit and not having blocks anymore is guaranteeing i won’t try to come back
they even made their plan for the next year look like an MCU presentation at comic con, maximum funko
Maro has wanted to do Marvel since before the Jacetice League. If he were actually a good writer outside of design articles (like I dunno a fucking novel or something. He stopped bringing up Rosanne), the Magic movie/TV show WotC wants to do would have been released decades ago. So now we have this. Richard Garfield hates it. The suits at Hasbro love it because they get recognized at cocktail parties now (actual quote).
I’m able to play the game through sheer momentum and being somewhat infinite at the local shops.
Kamigawa is one of my favourite sets for artwork, I wonder if this new set will be nice too.

LET’S FUCKING GOOOOO

I freaking loved Edge of Eternities. Can’t wait to see what this one will look like
