Asking to @robchapman : is it true that Maltese residents get 25000 € if they give up their driving license for 5 years? How successful is this operatiin there?

@lgsp @LaVi @ciclismo @robchapman
Ahhh it’s limited to young people. That makes a lot of sense if the government whishes a cultural change. And I believe it could be successful in Italy too. Many young people U30 would definitely appreciate 5k/€ and commute with an electric scooter instead.
@s1m0n4 @lgsp @LaVi @ciclismo essentially it is offered to people who are.25 to 50…if you are 18 you do not qualify as you have not been driving for 7 years.
It’s a ridiculous scheme, the public transport here is yes, free to residents. But it is utterly woeful. Cattle going to slaughter get a better journey than most people on a bus!@robchapman @lgsp @LaVi @ciclismo Yes, sorry. I posted the message after reading the Italian article that gave us inaccurate info.
Anyway I still think it’s a good move
@robchapman @lgsp @LaVi @ciclismo well, change can happen by building better infrastructure (cycling lanes, public transport, etc), but it can also happen if the people force the public administration to adapt to their trends.
I come from a small town in Italy where cars dominated the road until 2000s. Then the local economic crisis forced people to reduce their budget and they started taking the bike more. As a result it is now a city with 100 km of bike lanes for 90k residents.
@s1m0n4 ok, first thing. Yes Labour here has offered €25,000 to drivers to give up their licence. However, you only qualify if:
You are under 50, own a car,
Have been driving in Malta for at least seven yearsReason for the scheme: there are 445,000 registered vehicles in Malta
Story here: https://timesofmalta.com/article/car-drivers-offered-25000-give-licence-five-years.1106980
To date over 100 people have taken up the scheme. It ends July 1st!
Why such low engagement, Public transport here is awful!

@LaVi @lgsp @ciclismo@robchapman @LaVi @lgsp @ciclismo that’s a good initiative! Too bad it isn’t successful.
Do you qualify?
