They Live 1988

They Live is a 1988 American science fiction film written and directed by John Carpenter, based on the 1963 short story “Eight O’Clock in the Morning” by Ray Nelson. Starring Roddy Piper, Keith David, and Meg Foster, the film follows a drifter[b] who discovers through special sunglasses that the ruling class are aliens concealing their appearance and manipulating people to consume, breed, and conform to the status quo via subliminal messages in mass media.

John Carpenter has said this movie is about how much he hated the Reagan years, which is a cool sentiment.

It’s a relatively short film at 94 minutes but I’ve got some stuff to do later, so we will probably start promptly at 5:45PM Eastern US time to give people enough time to trickle in.

Content Warnings:

  • Violence and gore: “moderate”, “typical action movie violence”

  • mild drug use (weed and tobacco)

  • A sex scene where a woman not having informed consent is played for laughs.

I really couldn’t find much and I’m a little apprehensive as a result. Here’s hoping this one isn’t too tame! Of course, I said that about Prince of Darkness right before it got really disturbingly gnarly so who knows.
